Jaws (1975) is a lean, mean blockbuster.

Directed by Steven Spielberg.

Starring Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss among many others.

Spielberg's Jaws started the summer blockbuster. Steven wisely chose to keep the story simple and the action constant with characters that audiences could relate to. The simple storyline, intense action and characters audiences could easily relate to was not lost on Sylvester Stallone when he made Rocky (1976) a year later. Spielberg was tutored by Alfred Hitchcock and Steve applied Alfred's suggested presence to his shark and its impending violence and terror when Spielberg's mechanical shark kept breaking down. The bottomline is that Spielberg is a genius who reinvented movies and created the summer must see blockbusters.

The casting on Jaws was pitch perfect in that the three leads acting complemented each other and created a unique chemistry and bond that audiences could relate to. In the scene below watch how Shaw and Dreyfuss playfully outdo each other while Scheider stays quiet in the background. Note how Steven films Robert and and Richard in mostly long shots then close-ups for Roy's reactions.

Trivia - Steven Spielberg's real dog, Elmer was used as Brody's dog.
